Posts/Comments on 'Quora' Regarding Espresso
Recently, I performed a search on Quora using the word 'espresso' as I was curious to read the questions/answers posted to the forum regarding this coffee drink. What I had least anticipated upon reading a myriad of questions/answers regarding espresso is that despite a number of answers known to be true, many were not only partially correct but failed to mention other vital information such as ingredients/procedures normally adhered to for brewing a perfect shot of espresso. For example, while one answer—despite being altogether true—stated that coffee beans ground too fine/large can act to restrict/increase the flow of hot water passing through dry ground coffee under pressure thereby affecting the taste of the espresso, the same phenomena can result when tamping the coffee down too tight/loose or not at all regardless of the grind. Moreover, not one answer bothered to mention quality of water used in brewing an espresso in which event no matter what type/grind of coffee used, tamping, and other variables/procedures followed to the letter, if and when using tap as opposed to 100% natural Spring or purified water, one can rest assured ending up with a shot of espresso that tastes worse than imaginable. Moreover, I found no mention regarding an acceptable coffee to water ratio when brewing an espresso nor how to adjust the strength of an espresso affecting the amount of caffeine and taste. Another answer mentioned that the level of caffeine in an espresso is based on how the bean is roasted, where it's roasted, and weather conditions. While this may be true, the answer fails to include the fact that increasing the amount of hot water passing through the dry ground coffee under pressure also serves to increase the amount of caffeine and acidity. All considered, I am left with the impression that the majority of those who patronize the forum and post answers to the many questions pertaining to espresso are amateur/average espresso coffee drinkers at best who have limited knowledge regarding espresso and espresso-based coffee drinks obtained primarily from Starbucks or other gourmet coffee shop/cafe as opposed to brewing their own. If on the other hand a number of Quora contributors brew their own espresso, they appear to know no more than those who patronize Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for their coffee needs.
